We're considering cooking for our own wedding, to save money. About 70 guests, buffet style. Any suggestions? Are we crazy for even considering this?

We are doing the self catering as well. We are having family help. The reception site has a kitchen that we can reheat food (we are BBQ'ing/smoking meat) It's so much cheaper than hiring a caterer, and our family felt honored to be included in such an important part.

We're actually considering doing the same thing. However, we're renting a huge barrel grill & doing a fun, laid back thing. Just don't get in over your head! That's what I keep telling myself. Don't expect too much, don't try things you're not comfortable with, & do a few trial runs before the wedding. Have you budgeted how you're going to keep the food warm after it's cooked? Is the stuff you want to serve needing to be prepared the day of, or can it be prepared in advance? Are you doing it alone, or are family members going to do things for you? There's lot to think about - but I think it's a great idea. It saves money, & it's personal!
Have you thought of doing something like recipe cards as the favor? Say you serve 5 things that are family recipes ... or recipes from boxes. Ha! Anyway, print each one on a note card & give them as favors! I want to do that. It sounds too fun.
